Glutathione peroxidase
Glutathione peroxidase uses reduced glutathione, or GSH, to convert hydrogen peroxide and lipid peroxides into less reactive products. GSH becomes oxidized glutathione in the process.

Compound guide
From cellular signaling to what those pathways mean in everyday language.
Overview
Glutathione is an endogenous tripeptide and one of the cell's major redox buffers.
Glutathione is a three-amino-acid molecule made inside cells and one of the body's central antioxidant systems. It cycles between reduced and oxidized forms as it accepts and transfers electrons during detoxification and oxidative-stress control.
Inside the body
These receptors, enzymes, and signaling networks form the primary steps connecting this compound with changes inside cells and tissues.
Glutathione peroxidase uses reduced glutathione, or GSH, to convert hydrogen peroxide and lipid peroxides into less reactive products. GSH becomes oxidized glutathione in the process.
Glutathione reductase uses NADPH to convert oxidized glutathione back to GSH. The GSH-to-GSSG balance is therefore tied to cellular energy and reducing power.
Glutathione S-transferases attach glutathione to selected compounds to support processing and elimination. Reversible S-glutathionylation of protein thiols can also switch signaling proteins on or off.
In plain English
This system protects membranes, proteins, and DNA from excessive oxidative damage.
Cells continually regenerate glutathione rather than simply using a fixed supply.
These functions support detoxification and cellular regulation, but they do not validate broad cleanse, skin, anti-aging, or energy claims without outcome-specific evidence.
Glutathione connects peroxide removal, recycling of other antioxidants, detoxification enzymes, and maintenance of protein chemistry. Instead of blocking all oxidation, it helps cells keep oxidation and reduction in a controlled balance.

One important note
Glutathione's cellular role is well established. Human supplementation studies have produced formulation- and duration-specific results, including one six-month trial that increased body glutathione stores and a shorter trial that did not change measured markers.
